about

It was the late 80s, I had an awkward one-night, um, date. It was a hot, humid summer in Massachusetts. it was almost 1990.

lyrics

So hard to breathe when we woke up
The night had been a warning
The heat would be the only thing
To rise and shine this morning

The window down, her hair blows wild
Her hand goes back and forth
A wave like Miss America
I wave back - for what it’s worth

Chorus:
40 days to labor day
As I watch her drive away

What really happened doesn’t matter
Black dress on the floor
Empty it looked half as cold
As the night before

Chorus

Bridge:
When you’re born next to the water
Chances are you learn to swim
Being from the 1960s taught her
Going out, not coming in

Behind her my house is getting smaller
The shingles start to blister
Down the road she’ll never know
If it cooled off or if I missed her.

Chorus
