Back Channel Communication

by Larry Hirshberg

lyrics

Back. Channel. Communication. A door, slowly swinging. Somewhere behind her San Francisco sleeps. A door, slowly swinging. All the frequencies, one at a time. Listen. What do you need? A server, somewhere distant, serves distance.

Pies of light lifted from ovens of dark.
Old country recipes nourishing a last generation of rememberers.

Perfectly put together slow dancers in tall grass.

Shiny things lost underwater...
keys, rings, Saturn...They return to you when they can breathe, or some say, when there is great need.

Add the separation. Add the once-removed, the slow dissolve, the now you see it now you don’t. The dirty snowbank. The plastic grocery bag in a tree on a windy day. The last bird in the flock, dropping out of the sky.

All he wanted to do was make something beautiful and sit with it cooling in the dark. But then, one night under the river of stars, he stepped into the wrong car, received a back channel communication, and a door in San Francisco slowly stopped swinging.
