Weighing The Silence

by Larry Hirshberg

/

lyrics

Alice is a quiet one
Holding out her hand
The room is dark, her palm face up
Wondering what will land

Twenty-First century
Today it makes no sound
Her hand is poised, she's waiting there
For something to come down

She forms the words, and speaks them out
But no waves ripple then
Her fingers stretch, antenna-like
Try, send, receive, try yet again

Now Alice feels a tickle there
Rolling down her arm
She tightens and resists a bit
And then she cries alarmed:

“My hand is full of silence now,
My arm shakes and grows old
What I can hear's way lighter than
This silence that I hold.”

Special thanks to Sean Burress for the encouraging review of an early mix, and to J Bradley for delivering some criticism in a manner that gently allowed me to get back to work and make this thing even better!

Secret appearance by Judy, too.
