The Ballad of The Madison Martin

by Larry Hirshberg

/

about

In real life, a songwriter friend found a bit of a Martin guitar near the river here in Missoula. A strange thing to find. Wondering how it got there, I suggested he write a song, making up an origin story. He said, nah, and suggested I write the song. I did.

lyrics

The sun was weak and the ice had hardened
by the river under Madison Street
There was wood, a wet label said Martin
in the snow right next to my feet

I've found mail and I've picked up pictures
walking in my dream in the dark
Once a hundred dollars in a filthy book of Scripture
bought some brakes for my lover's old car
The night an unopened Marine Band Hohner
rose up from a pile of dead leaves
I played it on the corner 'til I fell asleep and lost it
But oh he sounded so sweet...

Possibly the sky was a flag of misfortune
Lowering itself to half mast
If only it was summer and I had not remembered
My hands around his neck as he passed

Once in a while I wake up and then I'm moving
Watching out the corner of my ear
I can't stop looking, there's forgotten songs playing
On the ground and I can taste 'em so clear...

The sun was weak and the ice had hardened
by the river under Madison Street
There was wood, a wet label said Martin
in the snow right next to my feet
